Abstract
The paper presents preliminary results of research project ″The Map of Russian Ethnic Media″, which is being carried out by a group of researchers since 2015. The project is focused on singling out both quantitative (number of media outlets, circulation rates, audience numbers, etc.) and qualitative (genres and topics, target audience, business strategies, etc.) characteristics of modern ethnic media in Russia. The paper examines broadcasting, newspapers, magazines and websites, which are produced in the languages of the ten biggest ethnic groups of Russia and outlines a number of tendencies that might be interested for both governmental and non-governmental bodies supporting ethnic media today, as well as for media owners and journalists working for such media (interdependency between the size of an ethnic group and the number of media in the language of that ethnic group; significant difference between the number of media in Russian and in the languages of ethnic groups today; the focus of most ethnic media on societal and political issues, and much more).
Keywords: ethnic groups, broadcasting, press, Internet, mass media, Russian Federation.
