Abstract

The lack of data on the audience of Russia's largest popular science event makes it difficult to fully assess its significance in terms of promoting scientific knowledge and public confidence in science. This paper presents the findings of a survey conducted among guests attending the NAUKA 0+ Festival, held at Moscow State University on October 7-8, 2023 (N=276). The main goal of this survey was to identify patterns in how people consume scientific information, attitudes towards scientific media, and the level of scientific knowledge of respondents. These findings will be used to inform future scientific events and research on the effectiveness of science communication. The questionnaire asked about the sources of information about science, the scientists that the festival guests would like to meet in the future, the scientific or popular science books they read, and the credibility of scientific information and its sources. The results show that traditional news and entertainment media, as well as social media and aggregators, are important sources of information for respondents, but the amount of scientific content in general publications and media is generally low. The festival guests do not have a high level of scientific knowledge. However, in general, we can see a desire to learn more about science and to use scientific information with reference to its source. The role of scientists as authorities and authors of scientific materials is also noted.

Key words: science festival; media consumption; scientific information; popularization of science; science's credibility
