Abstract
The article examines the key features of the French printing press functioning under the censorship during World War I. Adoption of a series of laws restricting press freedom, as well as the foundation of the state censorship institution limited the journalistic activities, especially in the sphere of dissemination of information of the military and diplomatic nature. Analysis of particular contradictions of the new regime of press functioning has revealed that the majority of periodicals supported the restrictions imposed. The French press would only experience the negative effect of economic problems and the loss of audience trust during the war, and it would not be able to fully overcome it. Special attention is paid to the conditions of the press at the front, as well as such a phenomenon as trench newspapers.
Keywords: World War I, censorship, trench newspapers, editorial model of trench press, poilu image, enemy image
