Abstract

In the article, the features of speech representation of the typical supreme rulers in the newspaper “Vedomosti” (1702–1727) are shown: the States rulers are mainly considered as representatives of worldly power (with the religious context of the coronation), the representatives of the clergy – as God’s vicars. The study reveals fundamental differences between the way of life of European kings and the rulers of Russia: if Europeans are very “human” (they can be sick and ill or show domestic and emotional intemperance), then the Russian authorities are expected to be idealized, performing only useful and generous actions and not being susceptible to illnesses at all. Such differences in the style of their speech representation served well-defined ideological goals of foreign and domestic policy and formed the audience's idea of the structure of the world around them, where there are rather imperfect “others” and almost ideal “domestic” rulers.

Key words: historical stylistics, Russian journalism of the XVIII century, speech representation, propaganda, Vedomosti.
