Abstract
Influenced by the new communication technologies, people`s understanding of the social structure is being transformed. With spread of the Internet and mobile communication, actualisation of new mechanisms of massification, change of communication practices and lifestyle, as well as with transformation of possibilities and needs of the media and their audiences, new concepts appear and adjust. In this article, the author makes an attempt to improve the concept ‘virtual community’, which is popular both in scientific literature and media, as not quiet correct and bereft of its denotation.
Key words: social structure, network communities, phantom groups, masses, massification.
