Abstract 

The article is devoted to coverage of political scandals in Catalonia by Spanish and Catalan media. These scandals broke out after conducting in Catalonia on October 1, 2017 a referendum on independence from Spain. The referendum ran counter to the Spanish Constitution, was forbidden by the authorities and its realization caused a harsh reaction from the official Madrid. Discrepancies that had been existing for many years between Catalonia and Spain, resulted in judicatures on corruption, as well as in mass protests and threatening of forcible solvation of the opposition between the center and the region. Both in Madrid and Catalonia, the media have been covering all the political scandals in the rebellious region subjectively. The Madrid media fight for the interests of the united and undivided Spanish state, while the Catalan media hold the position for a small nation demanding the independence from the metropole. Moreover, even conflicts with not political but corruptive backgrounds and scandals resulting fron administrative violations have been considered by journalists partially, in the context of the political opposition between Madrid and Barcelona.
