Abstract

The author considers specific nature of online communities for deaf and hard-of-hearing people through the example of social media in Russia. The article contains information on functional purposes, themes, language used, publication activity and average users engagement for 20 online communities which are the most popular among Russian deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Social media experience of All-Russian Society of the Deaf, main non-governmental organization representing this community in Russia, is presented in given article as well. Quantitative part of investigation shows that informal communities have more subscribers and higher level of engagement compared to the official ones, and only 2 out of 20 communities always have publications in 2 languages (both Russian and Russian sign language).
