Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study of Russian all news and news & talk radio stations as a separate segment of the national radio market. The focus is on the major business characteristics of broadcasters that are the largest in terms of audience. The paper is the introductory part of a complex research project "The Working Structure of a Russian Radio Journalist in the Digital Environment".

The primary aim of the study is to define the acting members of the segment, analyze the founding boards of the enterprises, their property status and available financial indicators.

Methodology. Conducting a comparative analysis of the radio stations, the authors used the official data provided by Mediascope (Radio Index), Roskomnadzor and GMC of Rosstat as well as the open information from the broadcasters themselves.

The main conclusions. The segment of all news and news & talk radio stations in Russia was established by the end of the 2000s. Despite disparities in the names of electronic media outlets and their founders, it was possible to identify the actual largest market participants, their legal affiliation to media holdings and a relatively low level of ownership concentration. Unfortunately, however, in most cases an assessment of the financial health of the radio stations under study remains an impossible task, which results from the specifics of the economic development of modern Russian media.

Key words: radio station, format, media enterprise, founder, holding, financial indicator.
