Abstract
Category of time is an important factor in the impact of film/TV-program on the viewer. As for the documentary, time plays here a special role because documentary movies fix the vital reality of the specific periods and reflect the historical and social time, and this fact determines the value of the screen documents. As for the viewer's perception of the on-screen time, this category has conventional character. Time can also change its characteristics due to the film editing and kinematic mode of the shooting camera. Analyzing the perception of documentary by the audience, the author concludes that Russian films produced by the cinema school named as "The new documentary film" don't cause the interest of public because they ignore the movement of time, up to creating in some films a sense of "loop of time'. The interest of the audience can be stimulated if time in the on-screen product is an integral part of its drama and composition structure. There are three types of artistic screen time in the documentary that are able to stimulate the audience interest: linear, nonlinear and periodic time. The significant part of the article is devoted to analysis of these categories of documentary films and TV programs.
Keywords: documentary, cinema, TV, time, dramaturgy, perception of film.
