Abstract

The article reports that the careful study of the realities of the North American United States by N.G. Chernyshevsky including the economy and politics of this country, the events of the Civil War that began in 1861, gave him the opportunity not only to objectively cover the life of the United States, but also to formulate his program of modernization of Russia. Chernyshevsky's attention was attracted by a rapidly growing US economy, he was interested in the political structure of this country, because he was a supporter of the republican form of government. At the same time, being a supporter of free labor, Chernyshevsky compared slavery in the United States and serfdom in Russia. Many of his publications in the "Politics" section were devoted to the beginning and the course of the war between the North and the South, a thorough analysis of the policy of the President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln.
